    Introduction

This chapter presents information on the age, sex and indigenous status of the Hunter New England population, including a breakdown by local government area.

Demographic information enables people to make informed decisions about the people who live in the area including details such as: the populations age, population by sex, population by birthplace, population by income, type of education, marital status etc.  Knowledge of the demographics characteristics of an area assists the user determine a number of issues including where the high growth areas are, areas of socioeconomic disadvantage, needs in special population groups and much more.

Demographics have the ability to reflect past demographic events as well as offer the opportunity to influence events today and in the future.  Two examples of this have been declining fertility and mortality.  The decline in fertility since the 1960’s has let to a slow growth in younger age groups whereas declining mortality has contributed to a large increase in the number of older people within the community.  The affects of this demographic change on health has resulted in a greater use of health care facilities as in general older people are bigger consumers of health care than the young.  An ageing population also affects the overall income in an area, housing and a vast number of demographic characteristics.

Users should therefore check the publications of these organisations as it is possible that they may have published even more up to date information on Hunter New England than those available in this resource. As this resource is an ongoing project, the indicators presented will be updated as soon as possible after the release of all datasets to Hunter New England Population Health.
